Amanda Langdon

I completed Master's level coursework in Library and Information Science at Indiana University Bloomington. I received my Bachelor's Degree in Art History with a minor in Religious Studies from Indiana University Bloomington. I have spent more than a decade working in the nonprofit field, ranging from public libraries and performing arts to higher education. My work has focused mainly on library science, public service, and administrative work.

 

My work as both a children's librarian and in administrative roles in higher education gave me a unique perspective on the impact education has on children as they grow and progress. This path seemed like a natural fit with a long history in administrative roles and a love for working with children.

 

I believe Progressive Education is the most optimal choice for the development of young people. Attending to the whole child, focusing on collaboration and community, and encouraging active learning nurtures and nourishes the person. It allows each child to develop and grow into a productive, thoughtful and engaged member of society. And, perhaps most importantly, it provides a democratic approach to learning that benefits all learners.

 

The outdoor integrated curriculum is such a boon for students. Children are curious about the natural world, and allowing for exploration gives them confidence in themselves. It also instills an interest in and appreciation for our environment, critical in developing well-rounded and conscious adults. I am especially excited by Virginia Chance School's emphasis on School-wide Thematic Units of Study. This focus on Compassion projects, encouraging the growth of students' desires to help others, and inspiring them to look beyond themselves, is a wonderful element of the learning experience. 

 

I stumbled across Chance School a few years ago while researching elementary schools in my position at a local library. At first glance, I didn't take much stock. However, after reading more, I was really blown away by their approach to teaching. I am thrilled to bring my experience and excitement to the Library here at Virginia Chance School. 

 

When I'm not working, you might find me volunteering. I am passionate about community engagement and equity. I have served on the Louisville Cultural Accessibility Association committee, am a current member of Louisville Association for Community Economics, and have volunteered with Louisville Community Grocery on various projects. I am an avid runner and serve as a head coach for 3rd-5th grade girls with Girls on the Run Kentuckiana. I love to spend time with my husband and two daughters - camping, kayaking, baking, playing board games, or just watching movies together. And if I'm not doing any of those things, I'm definitely reading or listening to a podcast.
