Heather Harter

After receiving a bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder, I moved to the great state of Kentucky to earn a master’s in social work from the University of Louisville. As hard as it was to leave Colorado, I have found a deep love of Kentucky. I am so excited to be teaching the 2’s this coming school year. I have had the privilege of teaching preschool for the past ten years and honestly believe that I was born to teach toddlers.   

Before discovering my love for teaching, I worked as a social worker for 15 years. For me, working at The Virginia Chance School is a perfect opportunity to combine my passion for teaching while focusing on the whole child progressive approach and doing it all in the most beautiful setting! To me, progressive teaching is ensuring that the child is supported not just academically, but socially and emotionally as well. As my own children would tell you, I love to talk about feelings! When the whole child is supported, we see relationships grow, self-confidence flourish, and learning happens in a way that is fun and engaging. What a joy it is to see children experience just how capable they are!  

What an honor it is to be a 2’s teachers as they learn and grow so much during their first year of school. I am continuously amazed by how much they develop socially, emotionally, cognitively, and physically in just one year! We are so lucky to have such a beautiful campus that allows the children to explore their natural environment. From exploring the woods with a magnifying glass, planting seeds in the garden, or caring for the chickens and bunnies, learning is happening all around us!   

When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my family, which includes my husband of 18 years, John, our sons, Max, 12 and Walker, 10, and our dog, Kevin. As a family, we love playing soccer, skiing, swimming, hiking, traveling, and spending time outdoors.
