I'm thrilled to be part of the Virginia Chance School community as a Kindergarten teacher this year! I hold a Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of the Cumberlands and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Georgetown College. With 6 years of classroom teaching experience at Virginia Chance School and 2 years as a floater and substitute teacher, I've had the joy of witnessing our students' growth and development firsthand.
My family has a close connection to Chance. My husband, Crawford, is an alumnus, and we are proud parents to Sylvie (6), Sam (4), and Whitt (4), all currently attending Chance. We value the school's Progressive educational approach, which focuses on hands-on, experiential learning and nature-based education. The philosophy of nurturing the whole child deeply resonates with me and aligns perfectly with my own teaching values. At Virginia Chance School, we integrate academic rigor with innovative teaching practices, ensuring that each child’s unique needs and interests are met. This approach emphasizes active learning, critical thinking, and individualized instruction, preparing students to think independently, explore their interests, and develop a lifelong love of learning. By focusing on the whole child, we nurture not just academic skills but also social-emotional development and creativity, preparing students to thrive in an ever-changing world.
Moreover, the commitment to nature-based learning at Virginia Chance School is a cornerstone of our curriculum. The natural surroundings provide an immersive learning environment where children can connect with nature, fostering curiosity and a sense of stewardship for the environment. This hands-on, experiential learning allows students to explore concepts in science, mathematics, and social-emotional learning in a tangible and meaningful way.
Outside of school, my family and I love being outdoors, whether in our backyard or at the lake. I cherish moments with loved ones, enjoy leisurely walks, and find comfort in a good book or show. I am eager to continue fostering a supportive classroom community where students learn, collaborate, and grow together.
