Sarah Queen

Primary First/Second Teacher

I am a Doctoral candidate in Educational Leadership currently working on my dissertation. I obtained my Master’s in Teaching with a focus on Elementary Education from the University of the Cumberlands and hold an MBA and a Master’s and Bachelor's in Accountancy from the University of Louisville.

I have been a member of the Virginia Chance School community since 2013. During that time, I served in many roles: parent, volunteer, substitute teacher, Chums teacher, preschool 2s teacher, student teacher, K/1 teacher, activities and events coordinator, and currently, primary 1/2 teacher.

My passion for progressive education began when my daughter, Mia, enrolled in the 3s preschool program at Virginia Chance School (she is now entering her first year of high school). I continue to be inspired by the lasting positive social and academic impact her time at Chance has had on her. In addition, she recalls her time at Chance so positively that she longs for opportunities to return and visit.

As an educator, I understand the importance of learning through inquiry and interest, seeing and understanding each child as an individual learner, encouraging curiosity and wonder, building community within our classroom, and making learning fun and exciting. I have witnessed the positive impact of developing critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and creativity as graduates move on into the larger world. Facilitating a classroom environment where children can connect their experiences to real-world situations by focusing on experiential learning makes learning more relevant and engaging. I am also passionate about providing opportunities for students to engage with social responsibility and inclusivity, equipping them to be thoughtful, informed citizens who can contribute positively to society.

When not teaching or working on my doctoral dissertation, I enjoy reading, walking my dog, Honey, dancing (to many Taylor Swift songs), and traveling with my family.
