Parent Education

The school is extending an invitation to you, to continue learning as a Virginia Chance parent. A variety of parent education classes will be offered throughout the school year and posted here. We hope you will make plans to attend to gain a greater understanding about early childhood development and the school’s commitment to excellence in education. You and your child will benefit!

“New to Chance” Parent Orientation
Thursday, August 13, 6–7:30pm

This evening’s discussions will include the logistics of a school day at Virginia Chance (arrival and dismissal, health and sickness policies, snacks and lunch, diapers, extended programs, how faculty and staff communicate with parents, etc.) as well as opportunities for your involvement as a “New to Chance” parent.

RSVP for adult attendance only; childcare is not offered for this session.


Opening Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences
Friday and Monday, August 14 & 17, tba

Opening conferences serve as an introduction to the school year – for the parents, teachers, AND students! This initial meeting, prior to the start of school, is an exciting time. It allows your child to meet his or her teachers and explore the room. It provides an opportunity for the parents and teachers to share their thoughts and review information in the “Welcome Packet.”

Child care is available for siblings during your conference session.

 

Parents’ Night

Middle School Application Process

As the Class of 2016 nears completion of the Virginia Chance School program, the search for a middle school begins. Elementary Program Director Sue Musson helps parents of Intermediate 5 students explore various school choices in the community.

Join Debbie Houston to a friendly discussion as a member of the Virginia Chance community. Topics will include Virginia Chance program, positive discipline, books, and will address questions and interests that attendees share.

“Developing Capable Young People” Parenting Workshop
Wednesdays, September 23 – November 18, 9:00 – 11:30am

Virginia Chance School is proud to offer a workshop­ to parents­ who want to improve their parenting­ skills and incorporate “Chancese” into their family. The course includes information regarding developmental­ stages, the parent’s role in supporting­ those stages, new understandings of our changed family living, and specific ways of communicating and practicing positive discipline­.  Registration forms will be distributed at the start of school.

Parent/Teacher Conference
Friday, October 30 and Monday, November 2; tba

This is a one-on-one learning opportunity!  After parents receive their children’s Progress Reports earlier in the week, parents meet with their child’s teachers to discuss and plan together.  Shared will be good news about each child and even better news of how he or she can grow to greater heights.  Parents and teachers celebrate strengths and partner together for the next areas of growth.  This conference is all about Virginia Chance students and their cognitive, physical, emotional, social and moral development!

 

STEM Family Night
Tuesday, November 10, 6:00-7:30pm

Virginia Chance School is partnering with the Kentucky Science Center for a night of hands-on STEM experiences (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) for students and parents at Virginia Chance.

 

Virginia Chance School Open House
Tuesday, November 17, 9:00–11:30am

After a brief meeting with the Head of School, you may observe any classroom, anytime during this day! Be amazed at how 2 and 3 year olds do group time. Watch elementary students at work during Math and Reading/Writing workshops.  Be wowed by a hands-on STEM education.  Watch how exploration through work and play leads to real learning and discovery. Here’s a bonus: the Head of School, and Preschool and Elementary teachers have scheduled times to meet with you and answer your questions!

A time for teachers and parents to review each child’s progress at this point in the school year. Location:  In each child’s classroom.

  • Conferences for two-year-old through Primary 3 are “adult-only”.
  • Meetings at the Intermediate levels include the students with parents and teachers.
  • Child care is available in the Funroom during conference times.
  • Classes and Chums are not in session.

“New to Chance” Day & Theme Study Brainstorm
Wednesday, May 10, 10 – 11:00am

This is a wonderful opportunity for the 2016-2017 newly registered Virginia Chance students and their parents to begin the transition to a new school. During this casual visit, your child will experience what it is like to be a student at Virginia Chance School. Experiences might include center and group activities, meeting teachers, making new friends, and enjoying play time. Children entering Virginia Chance as elementary students (Kindergarten – Grade 5) will also be involved in a Theme Study Brainstorming session during their visit. You will get to see first-hand what your child will experience an abbreviated school day at Virginia Chance while meeting faculty, staff and parents. We encourage you, your registered child, and spouse to attend.
